Homeopathy is one of the most versatile and rewarding tools I use in clinical practice. I incorporate it into care for the majority of my patients because it allows for deeply individualized treatment across physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms.
Despite its long history, homeopathy is frequently misunderstood. This real patient’s story demonstrates not only the value of homeopathic treatment, but also sheds light on some common misconceptions that patients and practitioners may have.
CASE PRESENTATION
A 46-year-old female came to my office with concerns of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), ADHD, rosacea, chronic pain, and food sensitivities. PMDD is a condition where significant mood changes like depression and anxiety occur before your menstrual period – more than just typical PMS mood swings. Her PMDD was extremely severe and disruptive, leaving her feeling like a completely different person for two weeks each month.
Emotional symptoms included:
- Depression: hopelessness, intrusive self-deprecating thoughts, and thoughts of self-harm
- Impulsivity in decision-making (e.g., quitting her job rashly)
- Irritability: short-tempered and reduced patience with family members
Physical symptoms included:
- Joint pain and general discomfort
- Difficulty falling and staying asleep
- Heavy bleeding during menses with clots
- Fatigue
- Food cravings
Prior treatments included:
- Talk therapy, which she found effective
- Prescribed and OTC medications for pain and sleep
- Various self-chosen supplements including herbs and vitamins, which helped with energy
Common Misconceptions About Homeopathy
Misconception #1 – Homeopathy includes all natural medicines
Clarification: This patient had taken herbs and supplements prior to seeing me, but not homeopathic remedies. Homeopathy and herbal medicine are not interchangeable, though both fall under “natural” or “alternative” medicine.
Misconception #2 – It is unsafe to take homeopathy with other drugs
Clarification: Homeopathy is extremely safe to use alongside other medications. Because remedies are ultra-diluted, they do not interact with drugs. In this case, the patient was on several medications for pain, yet it was safe to add a homeopathic remedy. Herbs, however, can interact with medications and require more caution.
REMEDY SELECTION
Many patients assume homeopathic remedies are selected based on diagnosis alone or that they function similarly to supplements. In reality, selection is based on the most characteristic symptoms and the totality of the case.
For this patient, her depressive symptoms were most unique and central to her case. She had a long history of trauma, including several immediate family deaths and the responsibility of caring for her siblings. She ruminated constantly, living in the past and feeling hopeless about the future.
I chose homeopathic Natrum muriaticum, which best matched her symptoms.
Question: Why not focus on her PMDD if it is a hormonal concern?
Answer: Her depressive symptoms were the most pressing. Natrum muriaticum is not typically associated with female health conditions, but it can still be the correct remedy if it matches the patient’s specific symptoms.
Misconception #3 – “I don’t have the symptoms listed on the bottle”
Clarification: Homeopathic remedies address a wide range of physical, mental, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Labels are mainly for marketing purposes. Even though this patient did not have seasonal allergies, which is what is listed on the Natrum muriaticum bottle, the remedy was still indicated.
FOLLOW-UP / TIMELINE
After starting the remedy, she noticed that her “inner noise” quieted and she was ruminating less. After two months on Natrum muriaticum, she was able to cope more effectively with her moods, feeling more grounded and in control. Over the following months, her depressive symptoms diminished significantly. Even though some other symptoms like food cravings and ADHD became more noticeable, this reflected a natural progression of healing in layers – once the overwhelming depression was reduced, it allowed other areas of imbalance to emerge and be addressed. By continuing the remedy, she experienced gradual improvement across all symptoms, ultimately achieving a noticeable enhancement in overall quality of life.
Misconception #4 – Homeopathy is a magic bullet
Clarification: Healing with homeopathy is not instantaneous. Rather, it supports the body’s innate ability to heal gradually, often in layers. In this case, the most pressing depressive symptoms improved first. Homeopathy provides the support for profound and lasting changes, even though it may take time and patience.
Homeopathy is not about quick fixes or suppressing symptoms. It is about working with your body’s innate intelligence and supporting healing in a thoughtful, individualized way. When used appropriately and alongside other supportive lifestyle and environmental changes, it can be an incredibly gentle yet effective catalyst for deep, lasting transformation.
